Sensex ends 276 pts lower at 54,088, Nifty settles below 16,200

Domestic equity markets continue to move lower in intra-day trading as it closes with losses for the fourth consecutive day in spite of early gains in the morning. The Sensex at Bombay Stock Exchange closed below 54,100 points while the Nifty at National Stock Exchange was settled below 16,200 level.  The Sensex tumbled 276 points, or 0.51 per cent to finish at 54,088 while the Nifty fell 73 points, or 0.45 per cent, to end at 16,167.

In the forex market, the rupee appreciates nine paise against the US dollar. The domestic currency was closed at 77 rupees and 24 paise against the American Unit.

Gold prices surge 125 rupees at Multi-Commodity Exchange for June contracts. The precious metal was trading at 50,700 rupees per 10 grams. Silver prices also gained 460 rupees to 61,100 rupees per kilogram for July Contracts when reports last came in.

In intra-day trade, Brent crude was trading at around 106 dollars and 44 cents per barrel.

In global share markets, Asian stocks were steady due to positive trends in US equity shares. Market observers are now watching closely Chinese inflation data for clues on whether the price pressures weakening the global economy. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose one percent, Japan’s NIKKEI-225 gained 0.2 per cent and China’s Shanghai Composite index up 0.7  per cent. On the other hand, Singapore’s Straits Times and South Korea’s KOSPI both slipped 0.2 per cent. European shares continue to extend their upward trends in intra-day trade.
