Bangladesh: Asani weakens into a cyclonic storm

The severe cyclonic storm Asani over West Central Bay and adjoining areas weakened into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday as it moved northwestwards. It lay centred over West Central bay off Andhra Coast at 6 a.m., said the latest bulletin of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Wednesday. It is likely to move in a northwest/northerly direction and gradually weaken into a deep depression by Thursday morning.

The cyclonic storm was still more than 1100 kilometres away from all the four major maritime ports of Bangladesh namely Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Mongla and Payra. The maritime ports have been advised to keep hoisting the distant warning signal 2. All fishing boats and trawlers over the north bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution.

The Met department has predicted moderate rain or thunder showers with temporary gusty or squally wind at a few places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.

Capital city Dhaka has been receiving intermittent drizzle since early morning on Wednesday. The sky remains overcast as of late afternoon on Wednesday.
