Ladakh celebrates 73rd Republic Day at historic Leh Polo Grounds

Union Territory Ladakh on Wednesday celebrated the 73rd Republic Day at historic Leh Polo Grounds. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur unfurled the national flag when light snow and petals from Army’s Chinook showered the grounds.

Speaking at 73rd Republic Day celebrations, RK Mathur congratulated Akhone Asgar Ali Basharat and Tsering Namgyal for getting conferred with Padma Shri awards this year and other state award winners. Mr. Mathur also listed various developmental projects to have better connectivity and living standards. He said, within the next two years, all habitations in Ladakh will be connected with 4G connectivity and roads. Municipal areas of Leh and Kargil will have roads in next one year.  He said after becoming Union Territory, 31 villages in Ladakh are connected with National Grid for power. Electricity consumers increased to 58 thousands and the demand to 72 MW.

Mr Mathur congratulated the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils in Leh and Kargil for contributing in over all development of the region. He said, both Hill Councils have Six hundred new jobs and recruitment process for 266 police jobs is underway. He also listed various employment generation and skills development programmes implemented for the youth in Ladakh.
Following the Covid SOPs, the Republic Day celebrations are symbolic this year in Leh. Yet the colorful traditional song and dance programmes have attracted the invitees.

Earlier in the morning, RK Mathur paid floral tributes to the martyrs at the War Memorial at the Hall of Fame in Leh. He was accompanied by the Fire and Fury General Officer Commanding Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta.
Similarly, Leh Hill Council CEC Tashi Gyaltson unfurled the flag at the council secretariat. Leh Councillors and officials also present on the occasion.
