India is celebrating its 12th National Voters Day today (25th January 2022), on the theme ‘Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible and Participative’.
The day is commemorated to raise awareness about the importance of voting in a democratic society and to educate people about their right to vote.
Marking the significant event of National Voters Day, Chief of Election Commission Sushil Chandra sent out a message to all citizens on All India Radio’s special programme, Surkhiyon Mein.
Why the day is celebrated on 25 January?
25th January marks the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI). The commission was established on this day in 1950 as an autonomous body under the ownership of the Ministry of Law and Justice that aims to ensure free and fair elections in the country.
The National Voters day was formally introduced in 2011 to mark the foundation day of the ECI, The main objective of the day is to educate and encourage young voters to vote during elections.
During the rallies in the government campus in 2011, a union cabinet meeting chaired by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accepted the Law Ministry’s proposal to enact 25 Jan as National Voters’ Day.
NVD 2022: Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible and Participative
This year’s NVD theme, ‘Making Elections Inclusive, Accessible, and Participative,’ focuses on ECI’s dedication to facilitating active voter involvement during elections and making the entire process hassle-free and memorable for all types of voters.
ECI organises various programmes & distributes awards this NVD 2022
The election commission of India has launched a national voter awareness contest on social media on the theme ‘My Vote is my Future- Power of One Vote’.
The contest aims to reiterate the importance of every vote through creative expression for the ongoing Assembly Elections 2022 under a host of categories like Song, Slogan, Quiz, Video Making and Poster Design. The winners of the contest will be presented with exciting cash prizes and accolades.
In addition to that, ECI also conferred National Awards for Best Electoral Practises for 2021-22 on State and District level officers for their outstanding performance in the conduct of elections in different spheres such as IT initiatives, Security Management, Election Management, Accessible Elections.
ECI Publication ‘Leap of Faith: Journey of Indian Elections’
An ECI Publication titled ‘Leap of Faith: Journey of Indian Elections’ has been released to celebrate NVD 2022.
The book narrates India’s electoral history and the growth of representative and electoral principles of the nation as it evolved from the 19th to 21st century. The book has been diligently researched from accredited sources and contextualises the very role of elections in the making of modern India.
It also focuses on the Election Commission of India’s persistent efforts to make the elections genuinely reflective of people’s verdict.
Another publication, titled “Pledge to Vote – A Decade-Long Journey of India’s National Voters Day,” has also been released. Starting from the Diamond Jubilee celebration, the book chronicles ECI’s National Voters’ Day celebrations till date.
Dedicated to the voters of the country, the booklet will inspire citizens of the country as it depicts the story of ‘Frontline Warriors’ of Electoral Democracy, especially through its pictorials.
The primary goal of the National Voters Day celebration is to encourage, facilitate, and maximise voter registration, particularly among new voters. The day is dedicated to the country’s voters, and it is used to raise voter awareness and encourage informed participation in the election process.
