Uttar Pradesh: Political parties gear up preparation for 1st phase assembly polls

With the issuance of notification for the first phase of elections on 10th of February in Uttar Pradesh, the political parties have geared up for the polls. Till date, Congress and SP-RLD alliance have announced their first list of the candidates. AIR correspondent reports that Congress released its first list of 125 candidates yesterday and by the evening Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance also announced the names of their 29 candidates.

The Congress’s list includes 50 women. Some of the prominent candidates that Congress has fielded include legislative party leader Aradhana Mishr Mona from Rampur Khas in Pratapgarh, party’s state president Ajay Kumar Lallu from Tamkuhi Raj in Kushinagar, Louise Khursheed, wife of former union minister Salman Khursheed from Farrukhabad, party spokesperson Pankhuri Pathak from Noida, Ajay Rai from Pindra in Varanasi, Ajay Kapoor from Kidwainagar Kanpur and Shivakant Tiwari from Husainganj Fatehpur.

Among the 29 candidates announced by the SP-RLD alliance, the SP has fielded candidates on 10 seats and RLD on 19. Some of the candidates fielded by SP include Zafar Alam from Aligarh, Nahid Hassan from Kairana, Kunwar Singh from Agra Cantt and Rafeeq Ansari from Meerut. BJP’s Central Election Committee has also finalised the names of its candidates in a meeting held in New Delhi during the last three days and will release its first list soon. Bahujan Samaj Party has announced that it will not forge any alliance in the state and will contest the polls on its own. Party president Mayawati and senior leader and MP Satish Chandra Mishra will not contest in the elections.
