Sensex rises 85 points, Nifty ends at 18,257; Tata Steel surges over 6%

Indian equity indices closed higher on Thursday. Strong buying interest was witnessed in Consumer Durable and Metal stocks. Tata Steel was the top gainer among blue-chip stocks, surged 6.39 per cent. JSW Steel, Sun Pharma, Coal India and UPL were among the other top Sensex gainers. While Wipro, Asian Paints, HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra were laggards.

Earlier in Asian Indices, South Korea’s Kospi declined by 0.35 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell by 0.96 per cent and China’s Shanghai Composite index declined by 1.17 per cent

Market Overview

The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 increased by 0.14 and 0.25 per cent respectively. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at 61,200 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 18,257 mark. The Sensex gained 85 points to trade at 61,235 and the Nifty50 rose by 45 points to trade at 18,257.

Nifty50 Index

In Nifty50 index shares, Tata Steel was the biggest gainer, increased by 6.45 per cent. JSW Steel, Sun Pharma, Coal India, UPL and Larsen were among the other gainers.

On the other hand, Wipro was the worst performer in the pack, down by 6.02 per cent. Asian Paints, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra and IndusInd Bank were the other worst performers in the pack.

Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices

The Nifty Midcap-100 index surged 0.65 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index rose 0.61 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, Polycab gained 8.24 per cent, Jindal Steel rose 5.85 per cent, Tata Elxsi, Aditya Birla Fashion and Trent also surged, while Oberoi Realty, Ramco Cements and Fortis Health declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, KEC gained 5.10 per cent. On the other hand, CSB Bank fell 5.26 per cent, UTI AMC, BASF and Blue Dart declined.

Sectoral Indices

In NSE sectoral indices, 13 out of 20 sectors surged. Nifty Consumer Durable was the top performer as it gained 5.15 per cent, Nifty Metal rose 3.48 per cent, followed by Nifty Healthcare increased by 3.14 per cent.
