UN Secretary-General appoints Shombi Sharp as United Nations Resident Coordinator in India

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday, November 15, appointed Shombi Sharp of the United States as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, after consultation with the Government of India.

“UN Secretary-General appoints Shombi Sharp as UN Resident Coordinator in India. He will serve as a representative of the SG for development in the country. Mr. Sharp will lead our work on the ground, including the national COVID response plans to recover better for the SDGs,” the statement from United Nations Office in India reads.

The 52-year-old American diplomat and a nominee for the UNDP Administrator’s Award in his career spanning 25 years promoted inclusive and sustainable development internationally. He recently served as United Nations Resident Coordinator in Armenia.

Upon reaching India, the new UN Resident Coordinator in India, said, “Thrilled to arrive today in our new home of Delhi, India! And on my birthday no less, happy to learn it is also the birthday anniversary of India’s 1st Prime Minister Nehru, celebrated as Children’s Day/ Bal Diwas.”

Sharp’s prior stint with the World Organization include holding leadership positions at the United Nations Development Programme, where he was Resident Representative in Armenia, Deputy Resident Representative in Georgia, Deputy Country Director in Lebanon, Regional HIV/AIDS Practice Team Leader for UNDP Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States in Russia, Programme Manager for the Western Balkans in New York, and Assistant Resident Representative in Russia.

Prior to his association with United Nations, Sharp started his career in development with the international non-profit CARE International in Zimbabwe.

United Nations Resident Coordinator:

The Resident Coordinator (RC) held the responsibility to lead United Nations Country Team as being the highest ranking representative of the United Nations Development System at the country level and reports to the Secretary General. According to the UN data, the Resident Coordinator reports annually to the host Government on the system wide implementation of the UNDAF.

One of the key roles of the Resident Coordinator includes, to ensure system-wide accountability on the ground and coordinating UN support to countries in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
