Babasaheb Purandare: Author, historian & a legacy


“All of us will always be indebted to him for his sterling contribution of taking the life and history of Shivaji Maharaj to people.” These are the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Babasaheb Purandare, an eminent author and historian.

Earlier today, (November 15), Babasaheb breathed his last. He was 99.

Born Balwant Moreshwar, Shiv Shahir Babasaheb Purandare was born on July 29, 1922. At a very young age, he had started writing stories related to Shivaji Maharaja’s life and times. It is said, Babasaheb Purandare only breathed to spread the noble works of Shivaji Maharaj.

Literary work

Babasaheb Purandare was a writer, historian, and theatre personality. Baba Saheb Purandare’s work reflects his unwavering devotion to Shivaji Maharaj. He had written numerous books on the life and time of Shivaji Maharaja. These include Sarkar Wada, Raja Shivchhatrapati, Maharaj (Shivaji Maharaj), Shelar Khind, and more.

In 1950, Babasaheb’s 900-page magnum opus ‘Raja Shivchatrapati’ was published in two parts. The book is widely read and has been reprinted multiple times.

During the 80s, Babasaheb Purandare had directed a play on the life of Shivaji Maharaj named ‘Janata Raja’. The play was immensely popular and garnered tremendous response from India and abroad.

He was also associated with Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal from an early age. Babasaheb was a great orator too. He had lectured on the life of Shivaji Maharaj in the entire country. Known for his work on Shivaji, he had done extensive research work on him. He had deeply studied forts in Maharashtra and historical documents related to Maratha empire.

Awards & Accolades

Babasaheb was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2019 for his historical research. He was also awarded the highest State award – Maharashtra Bhushan in 2015. Madhya Pradesh Government had also saluted him by awarding him the Kalidas award. He is also remembered for his immense contribution to the liberation struggle of Goa.

Tribute from others

On Babasaheb’s sad demise, several leaders paid tribute to the late author. “The demise of Babasaheb Purandare has created a void that will never be filled in the world of history and culture. The ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj which Babasaheb Purandare ji presented in front of the country, these ideals will continue to inspire us,” said PM Narendra Modi.

Speaking at the celebration to mark the centenary year of Baba Saheb’s life, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that all of us will always be indebted to him for his sterling contribution of taking the life and history of Shivaji Maharaj to people.

Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu said that he was a renowned author, historian, and theatre personality and will always be remembered for his great work on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.


Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the late historian. He said he was deeply anguished by the passing away of noted author and theatre personality, Babasaheb Purandare.

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackray, and other eminent dignitaries also expressed grief over the demise of the noted historian. His last rites were performed in Pune with State honors at Vaikunth crematorium at 10 am today. He passed away at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital this morning.

Shiv Shahir Babasaheb Purandare’s legacy will continue to live on with his extensive works and continue to inspire young historians and authors.
