Padma Awards are honouring true grassroots personalities: Padma Bhushan Awardee & Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan

A long standing innings of over four decades in service to the nation finally comes full circle when the eminent Parliamentarian Sumitra Mahajan was conferred with India’s one of highest civilian award “Padma Bhushan” recently.

India’s first 8-time woman Member of Parliament (MP) Sumitra Mahajan was the 16th Speaker of Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019 and she represented the Indore constituency of Madhya Pradesh for a record period of 3 decades (1989 to 2019).

Interacting with Prasar Bharati News Service (PBNS), the eminent Parliamentarian asserted how by felicitating grassroots heroes with Padma Awards are significantly contributing in uplifting the nation.

“The change in Padma Award has come recently from the past 3-4 years, earlier, powerful personalities used to recommend for the awards and they used to get it. But now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his entire team lookout for the people who are working for real. The process to send recommendations for awards has also become online. But above all, you can see how these people have been searched, which includes collecting reports from the District Collector from the area that person belongs to, so it can be confirmed that he/she is genuinely working, ” said the Former Lok Sabha Speaker.

“The Padma Awards are given to those people who are really working diligently in various domains for the society. This is what I liked the most, that these people have been getting searched for their good work that they are doing in different verticals like Business, Art, Social Work, Sports among others. I feel that the committee looking after the awards are conferring it only after sincerely studying, not by anyone’s recommendation,” she added.

The veteran politician also shares an interesting initiative called ‘Stree Shakti Puraskar’, which she started to felicitate common hardworking and diligent women when she was the Women and Child Development Minister.

We talk about women empowerment, and this thing was in my mind as I have worked a lot for the development of women. Then, we started ‘Stree Shakti Puraskar’ as I thought women do a lot of hard work but how will they get the recognition for that. After that, we started five types of Stree Shakti Puraskar at the national level to felicitate women working diligently in different domains. That’s how we recognised five women from entire India every year for their work, Sumitra Mahajan asserted.

The former Lok Speaker also expressed her gratitude for being awarded with Padma Bhusan and said, “To date, whatever work I have done, I did it in an orderly, diligent and dedicated manner.”
