Sensex ends above 61,000 mark for first time, Nifty also closes over 18,300

At the stock markets, rising for the sixth straight session, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange climbed 569 points, or 0.9 percent, to end at a fresh all time high of 61,306, today. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange advanced 177 points, or 1 percent, to 18,339. In the broader market, the BSE Midcap index and the Smallcap index added about 0.5 percent, each.
Sectorally, on the BSE, the Bankex was the leading gainer, climbing 1.7 percent. The Metal and the Finance index advanced 1.4 percent, each; the Capital Goods and the Realty index added 1.2 percent, each; the Power and the Basic Material index rose 1.1 percent, each; the Industrials index moved up 1 percent, the Utilities index gained 0.9 percent; the IT index ended higher 0.7 percent and the FMCG, the Tech and the Consumer Discretionary index rose 0.5 percent, each. The Auto index was the only loser, falling 0.7 percent.
