In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direction of boosting the availability of oxygen to hospitals, over 1,000 oxygen plants, PSA (pressure swing adsorption), now have been operational under the PM CARES fund.
Durga Shanker Mishra, the Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary has informed that out of the 1,224 PSA oxygen plants sanctioned by the Central Government, 1,183 are currently operational. He further stated that the work on the remaining plants will be completed by the end of this month.
The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said, the work on the oxygen plants have been completed in 22 states, while more than 90% of the work has been completed in the remaining states.
In 5 states — Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Maharashtra — the work of installing PSA plants under the PM CARES fund is more than 90% completed. All these plants have a warranty of 18 months to 5 years, said Durga Shanker Mishra.
The Ministry said around 1,200 crore rupees have been spent on the installation of these plants. The aim of establishing Oxygen Generation Plants at Government hospitals in the district headquarters is to further strengthen the public health system and ensure that each of these hospitals has a captive oxygen generation facility.
This will further strengthen the public health system and will enable the augmentation of medical oxygen availability in a cost-effective manner in various medical conditions wherever the need arises.
What is Pressure Swing Adsorption technology?
Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is a technology used to separate gases like hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen from ambient air. The technology uses the fact that certain gases under high pressure tend to get attracted to solid surfaces or absorbent materials like zeolites, activated carbon, and molecular sieves.
The advantage of using PSA technology is that the only raw material requirement is natural air. Moreover, it is a cost-efficient process for producing oxygen. A PSA process can continuously be used for an uninterrupted supply of oxygen.
