Widespread heavy rains continue to pound several parts of Kerala

Widespread heavy rains continue to pound several parts of Kerala leaving many low lying areas in the state inundated. Three lives were lost in separate rain-related incidents across the state. Two children, a seven month old baby and her eight year old sister died as earth fell on their house at Karipur in Malappuram district early this morning following heavy rains in the region. An elderly person lost his life when he fell into a canal near Thenmala in Kollam district.

In Ernakulam, river water entered the Siva Temple on the banks of the river at Aluva in Ernakulam district following rise in water level of River Periyar. In Kozhikode, Mavoor Road in the city remains submerged.
Heavy rocks fell on the hill road connecting the Attappady tribal region in Palakkad district and efforts are underway to clear the debris.

The sluice gates of Peringalkoothu Dam in Thrissur district have been opened. The authorities have warned people living on the river banks to remain alert. The road connecting Chalakkudi and Athirappally waterfalls remains closed.

A red alert has been issued for Kakki, Peringalkoothu, Kundala, Kallarkudi, Mangalam, Vazhani and Peechi dams as water level is fast approaching their full reservoir level. Water is being released from several dams as a precautionary measure.

The State Disaster Management Authority has issued Orange Alert for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts. A Yellow alert has been issued for the northern districts of the state.
