In West Bengal, peaceful polling is going on for by-election at Bhabanipur assembly constituency in Kolkata and polling at Shamshergunj and Jangipur seats in Murshidabad. Polling started at 7 am this morning and will continue till 6.30 pm in the evening. Nearly 33% polling has been recorded till 11 am.
Trinamool Congress Chief and Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee is contesting as the party candidate in the seat. BJP fielded Priyanka Tibrewal while Srijib Biswas is contesting as the CPIM candidate. Webcasting is being done from all 287 booths of Bhabanipur. Heavy radio flying squad, RT mobile vans are also in place along with over 2 thousand Kolkata Police personnel and 35 companies of central forces in this constituency to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling.
In Odisha, voting for the bye poll to Pipili assembly constituency is progressing smoothly. Till 11 am today, more than 24 per cent of voters had cast their votes.
Even as the polling day progresses, voters are seen lined up outside the polling booths to cast their votes. About 2.30 lakh voters will decide the fate of ten candidates in the fray. Polling that began at 7 am is being held under adequate security arrangements, with no untoward incident so far. Voters are also abiding by all the covid-19 protocols. This is the third time that the by-poll has been re-scheduled with the cancellation of the earlier two notifications for different reasons. The seat has fallen vacant due to the demise of the sitting MLA Pradeep Maharathi of Biju Janata Dal in October 2020.
