Sensex crosses 60k mark for first time, Nifty above 17,850; Realty & IT stocks top gainers

It was an exceptional day for the Indian equity markets, with the BSE benchmark Sensex closing above the 60,000 mark for the first time. Benchmark indices witnessed positive cues from the global equity market on Friday, with the Sensex touching a record high of 60,333. Asian Paints was the top gainer among blue-chip stocks, surged 3.72 per cent. M&M, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank and Bharti Airtel were among the other top Sensex gainers. While Tata Steel, SBI, Axis Bank and ITC were laggards.

Earlier in Asian Indices, Singapore’s Straits Times fell by 0.49 per cent and China’s Shanghai Composite declined by 0.80 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index rose by 2.06 per cent.

Market Overview

The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 increased by 0.27 and 0.17 per cent respectively. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at 60,000 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 17,853 mark. The Sensex gained 163 points to trade at 60,048 and the Nifty50 rose by 30 points to trade at 17,853.

Nifty50 Index

In Nifty50 index shares, Asian Paints was the biggest gainer, increased by 3.85 per cent. M&M, Eicher Motors, HCL Tech, HDFC Bank and Bharti Airtel were among the other gainers.

On the other hand, Tata Steel was the worst performer in the pack, down by 3.53 per cent. JSW Steel, SBI, Divis Labs, Axis Bank, Shree Cements and ITC were the other worst performers in the pack.

Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices

The Nifty Midcap-100 index fell 0.78 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index increased 0.12 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, Oberoi Realty gained 10.00 per cent, Vodafone Idea rose 9.00 per cent, Tata Chemicals, Aditya Birla Fashion and Tata Elxsi also surged, while Dr Lal PathLab, Alembic Pharma and Apollo Tyres declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, Chambal Fertilisers gained 11.23 per cent. On the other hand, JK Bajaj Electric fell 3.93 per cent, PVR, Ceat and Sterling & Wils declined.

Sectoral Indices

In NSE sectoral indices, 7 out of 20 sectors surged. Nifty Realty was the top performer as it gained 1.50 per cent, Nifty IT rose 0.78 per cent, followed by Nifty Auto increased by 0.54 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty Metal was the worst performer, down by 2.10 per cent.
