Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addresses Joint sitting of Karnataka legislature

The Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the Joint sitting of Karnataka legislature today on safeguarding the values of parliamentary democracy.

The Speaker noted that at a time when India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amruth Mahotsav, it has to look back and ponder over the journey taken by the country under the constitution adopted for the people and by the people.

The Parliamentary democracy adopted by us, he stressed, emphasize on debate and discussion in the legislature, on upholding democratic values and on raising issues of people and the country.

The Speaker noted with concern the recent developments of deliberate attempts of stalling the proceeding of the House, the sloganeering and holding of placards in the well of the House.

He observed that people want the Parliament to function, to deliberate business, to make laws after extensive discussion and active participation of the members.

He regretted that the members creating ruckus in the House are only degrading and weakening the parliamentary democracy.

He stressed on the need for all the political parties to sit together and work towards creating a conducive atmosphere in the legislature for debate and discussion to happen.

He said a basic decorum and etiquette must be followed by the members while the laws are being passed in the House.

During the joint sitting of Karnataka legislature, former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa was given the best legislator award by the Lok Sabha Speaker.

Congress had boycotted the Speaker’s address while JD(S) members including former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy participated in the event along with BJP legislators.
