A national-level cyclist Pavitra Kartikoti realised her dream of owning an international quality mountain bike when Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai handed over an Argon 18 E-119 bike imported from Canada to her in Bengaluru today.
Pavitra has been selected to compete in the Khelo India games to be held in Patiala in Punjab, but had no means to buy the mountain bike. Her father is a farm labourer and mother is a cook under the Mid-Day Meal Programme. During a television programme with the Chief Minister, the cyclist from Kadakola village in Gadag district in North Karnataka, Pavitra had called the television studio and expressed her situation and had requested for help. Today, the aspiring cyclist got her dream bike with the help of donors who had responded to the call given by the State Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports on an appeal by the Chief Minister. Speaking during the bike handing over ceremony, the Chief Minister thanked the Sports Department Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Shalini Rajneesh for organising the donors and for arranging the import of the cycle in a short time. He further said that the cycle velodrome in Vijayapura will be made available to the cyclists to practice for national and international level competitions.
