To compete with the developed world, our region has to become a stakeholder in emerging technologies: PM Modi

The 21st Meeting of SCO Council of Heads of State was held today in Dushanbe in a hybrid format. The meeting was chaired by the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon. This Summit assumes significance as the organization is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The leaders evaluated the organization’s actions over the last two decades and examined the current situation and future possibilities of cooperation at the Summit.

During the summit, PM Narendra Modi welcomed Iran as a new Member State of the SCO and three new Dialogue Partners – Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar.

Highlighting the recent developments in Afghanistan PM Modi said, ‘’I believe that the biggest challenges in this area are related to peace, security and trust-deficit and the root cause of these problems is increasing radicalization. Recent developments in Afghanistan have made this challenge more apparent. SCO should take an initiative on this issue.’’

PM Modi stated that landlocked Central Asian countries could benefit from connecting with India’s vast market and the country’s investments in Iran’s Chabahar port was driven by this reality.

He further said that, “Central Asia’s vast economic potential has remained untapped because of radicalization and extremism,” Modi said. “If the region wants to benefit from fossil fuels or intra-SCO trade, we will need to lay more emphasis on connectivity

Talking about the glorious history of the region, PM Modi said that the region of Central Asia has been a bastion of moderate and progressive cultures and values. Traditions like Sufism have flourished here over the centuries and spread throughout the world. Its influence in the cultural heritage of this region can still be seen. ‘’On the basis of this historical heritage of Central Asia, SCO should develop a common template to fight radicalization and extremism,’’ he added.

The PM stated that India shared its technologies like UPI and Rupay Card to increase financial inclusion and digital platforms like our Aarogya-Setu and COWIN in the fight against COVID with other countries and also it is open to share them with SCO partners by organizing capacity building activities.
