West Bengal: Political parties gear up for upcoming by-poll in Bhabanipur Assembly Constituency of Kolkata

In West Bengal, political parties are getting prepared for the upcoming by-poll in Bhabanipur Assembly Constituency in Kolkata. While Trinamool Congress has been conducting workers’ meetings and graffiti in favour of their candidate, state-level leaders of the BJP will be meeting today to discuss the party candidate.

Meanwhile, Congress has also hinted at filing their candidate for the prestigious contest and it has been conveyed to the AICC.

Polling will be held on the 30th of this month. Nominations can be filed till 13th of this month while the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be 16th of September.
It may be recalled that Trinamool Congress has announced Chief Minister and party Chairperson Mamata Banerjee’s name as the candidate for Bhabanipur seat.

Ms Banerjee was expected to contest from her erstwhile constituency as she lost the election to BJP’s Shubhendu Adhikari at Nandigram seat in the State Assembly elections. Other political parties are yet to announce their candidates for the by-poll in Bhabanipur which was necessitated after TMC MLA Sovandeb Chattopadhyay resigned, paving the way for the party chief.

The by-election is crucial as Ms Banerjee needs to be elected to the Assembly within six months after taking oath as the Chief Minister to avoid a constitutional crisis.
