An all-party meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday unanimously agreed that instructions should be given to the State Backward Classes Commission to prepare empirical data as soon as possible to give political reservation to OBCs. The meeting was held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai today to discuss the issue of OBC reservations in local bodies.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis said that there was a positive discussion on the issue of collecting empirical data through the State Backward Classes Commission and not holding local body elections in the state until the issue of political reservation of OBCs is resolved.
Minister Vijay Vadettiwar clarified that the meeting agreed to postpone the local body elections till the empirical data is collected. He said the state government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to get the imperial data from the Centre and the matter will be heard on 23rd of this month. He added that there was a discussion today about what can be done until then. The Supreme Court earlier this year quashed quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local bodies in Maharashtra after observing that the total reservation should not exceed 50 per cent.
