India launched its first-ever nationwide sports and fitness quiz on Wednesday, September 1 in New Delhi. The Fit India Quiz, launched in the presence of the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, and Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan is part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav celebration and aims to promote the importance of fitness and sports among school-going students.
Minister of State of Youth Affairs and Sports, Nisith Pramanik, and Tokyo Olympics medalists Neeraj Chopra and P V Sindhu also joined the event virtually.
The Fit India Quiz
The Fit India Quiz is designed to involve school students from across the country in a National level contest. The purpose of the quiz is to create awareness about fitness and sports among school-going children, provide them a national platform to compete, and an opportunity to win a total cash prize of more than Rs 3 crores for their schools.
How to Participate?
To participate in the quiz, schools will have to register on the link provided on the Fit India website between September 1 to 30 and nominate the students who are to take part in the preliminary round of the quiz at the end of October 2021.
The winners of the preliminary round will then have to take part in the State round of the quiz in December 2021. The State-level winners will then go on to participate at the National level in January-February, 2022. Furthermore, the final round of the quiz will also be telecasted on Star Sports.
In line with New Education Policy
The Fit India Quiz is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP aims to integrate sports with education. Physical Education has been made mandatory for all students at all levels of school according to the available facilities and teachers.
During the launch of the Fit India Quiz, Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan said that the NEP 2020 gives special attention to sports-integrated learnings for students to adopt fitness as a lifelong attitude. Adding further, he said that there is a strong interconnection between fitness and education.
The Union Education Minister also added that Fit India Quiz will provide a national platform to students to showcase their knowledge about fitness and sports, create awareness about India’s rich sporting history, including indigenous sports, sports heroes, and how traditional Indian lifestyle activities hold the key to a fit life for all.
Further, NEP promotes multidisciplinary studies and holistic development, supporting students who want to take up sports as a career choice.
Mental Fitness is equally important
Addressing the event, Union Minister for Sports, Anurag Thakur iterated, “Mental fitness is equally important to physical fitness. The Fit India Quiz will inculcate mental alertness at a very early age and the quiz is a perfect way to simultaneously enhance sports knowledge.”
The quiz has been designed in such a way that it involves the students in a competition of mental skill and physical fitness.
In recent years, sporting culture is developing at a fast pace in the country. The initiative of the Government will only add momentum to the goal of building a sporting culture in the country with the school students as its champions. Further, sports also help in character building in addition to helping one manage stress level.
The Fit India Quiz is a step in the direction of making learning fun and stress-free. PM Narendra Modi has also time and again called for a stress-free environment for students to learn and grow.
Fit India Movement
Launched on August 29, 2019, the Fit India Movement aims to make fitness an integral part of one’s daily life, calling for behavioral changes for a more physically active lifestyle.
Fit India mission promotes fitness as an easy, fun, and free activity, and creates awareness through focused campaigns on fitness and various physical activities that promote fitness, encourages indigenous sports, and makes fitness reach every school, college/university, a possibility.
People of every age group have participated in the Fit India Mission, organized in the forms of freedom runs, and other activities. The Ministry has also launched the Fit India mobile app.
The Government has been taking initiatives to make health, wellness, and fitness a normal and priority for all age groups. Furthermore, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted normal routines and the relevance of Fit India Movement increased manifold.
