The Sensex and the Nifty on Wednesday witnessed modest losses. Both stocks fell more than 0.3 percent. The BSE Sensex lost 214 points, or 0.37 percent, to finish at 57,338. The NSE Nifty also fell 56 points, or 0.33 percent, to settle at 17,076.
In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap gained 0.92 percent and the Small-Cap index surged 0.22 percent.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 14 companies gained while 16 logged losses. Asian Paints was top gainer as it surged 3.2 percent followed by SBI which gained 1.7 percent. Axis Bank climbed one and half percent and Dr Reddy surged 1.2 percent. Titan and Larsen Toubro, both rose 0.9 percent.
On the other hand, Mahindra and Mahindra plunged 2.9 percent, Tata Steel declined 2.7 percent and Bajaj Finserv fell two percent. TCS and HDFC, both slipped 1.9 percent.
In sectoral indices, 13 out of 19 sectors logged gains. Realty gained the most as it climbed 5.5 percent. Power surged 1.7 percent and Consumer Durables gained one and half percent.
On the other side, Metal declined 1.8 percent, IT fell 1.4 percent and teck slipped 1.2 percent
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was negative as shares of 1456 companies gained while 1726 fell. Shares of 148 companies remained unchanged.
