POSHAN Maah: Holistic Health for Women & Children

Women and Child Development Ministry will celebrate the POSHAN Maah across the nation throughout this September under the essential POSHAN Abhiyan.

What is POSHAN Abhiyan?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 March 2018, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, launched the POSHAN Abhiyaan from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. The Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition or as popularly known as POSHAN Abhiyaan, or National Nutrition Mission is the Government’s flagship programme to improve nutritional outcomes for children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.

Given the success and need of this noble initiative, Mission Poshan 2.0 (Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0) was announced in the Budget 2021-2022 as an integrated nutrition support programme, to strengthen nutritional content, delivery, outreach and outcomes with a focus on developing practices that nurture health, wellness and immunity to disease and malnutrition.

POSHAN Maah for Holistic Nutrition

This year, as India celebrates the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, to ensure speedy & intensive outreach, the entire month of September has been subdivided into weekly themes for a focused and assimilated approach towards improving Holistic Nutrition.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has planned a series of activities throughout the month in tandem with the States/UTs.

The thematic approach being followed this year is divided into four parts:

Theme 1 (September 1-7) Plantation Activity as “PoshanVatika

Theme 2 (September 8-15) Yoga and AYUSH for Nutrition – under this, Sessions will be held on “5-minute Yoga Protocol” (Y-break or yoga break) at various workplaces for the employees of Government and corporate bodies.

Theme 3 (16-23 September) Distribution of the ‘Regional Nutrition Kit’ to Anganwadi beneficiaries of High Burdened Districts – under this theme Awareness campaigns on the importance of regional/local food will be held alongside the Distribution of Nutrition Kits comprising of regional nutrition such as Sukadi of Gujrat, Panjiri of Punjab, Sattu of Bihar, and Chikki of Maharashtra.

And finally, Theme 4 (24-30 September) will be about the Identification of SAM children and the distribution of nutritious food.

The Ministry will also conduct a Sensitization or awareness drive for COVID vaccination and Observance of COVID Protocols. There will be a special drive for Height and Weight Measurement for Children (under 6 Years of Age) during the PoshanMaah.

Slogan writing and Recipe competitions will be organized to highlight the locally available nutritious food for pregnant women.

These drives will be carried out by Anganwadi workers, health and family welfare department through ASHA, ANM, primary health centres, community health centres, school education and literacy department through schools, Panchayati Raj departments through panchayats, and rural development through self-help groups.

Poshan Abhiyaan is a noble initiative that intends to increase nutritional awareness and responsiveness among mothers of young children, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, family members including husbands, fathers, mothers-in-law and community members, health care providers (ANM, ASHA, Anganwadi worker) about vital nutrition behaviours.
