President Kovind says world recognizes potential of traditional Indian medical practices in COVID times; Lays foundation stone of UP’s first AYUSH University in Gorakhpur

President Ram Nath Kovind said that the world has recognized the potential of traditional Indian medical practices in the times of COVID pandemic. He said that the time has come to give recognition to the AYUSH medical practices at the global level and the establishment of AYUSH University in Uttar Pradesh will help immensely in this regard.

On the third day of his visit to Uttar Pradesh, President laid the foundation stone of the state’s first AYUSH University in Gorakhpur today. He said that the Central Government established a dedicated AYUSH Ministry in 2014 to promote the traditional Indian medical practices. He said that it is heartening to know that Uttar Pradesh also established a dedicated AYUSH Department in 2017 and now AYUSH University will come up in the state.

The President said that since the ancient times India has laid stress on the good health of its people. He said, the contribution of Guru Gorakhnath in the development of Yoga is immense and therefore, it is apt to name the state’s first AYUSH University as Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH Vishvavidyalaya.

Mr Kovind said, the demand for various medicinal herbs has increased manifold in the pandemic times and the farmers could benefit by producing such medicinal herbs. This will help in boosting their income.

Governor Anandiben Patel in her address thanked the Central Government for introducing schemes like Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for free distribution of LPG gas cylinders, Ayushman Bharat Yojana and Mission Indradhanush.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the AYUSH University in Gorakhpur will help in promoting the traditional Indian medical practices at the global level. He said, it will also act as a single platform by bringing all AYUSH colleges under its umbrella.

The State Government has fixed 2023 as the deadline to complete the construction of the AYUSH University. Spread over 52 acres, the University will house Ayurveda, Unani, Homoepathy and Yoga medicare on its campus. The budget of over 299 crore rupees has been earmarked for its construction. The University will be instrumental in research in the fields of AYUSH.

Ninety-four colleges of AYUSH discipline of the state will be affiliated to this University. With the establishment of AYUSH University, Gorakhpur will get a major boost in the field of health care as the city already has a Medical College and a soon to be inaugurated AIIMS.
