The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) completed seven years today and the Union Ministry of Finance said that over 430 million accounts have been opened under the scheme as on August 18, 2021. The scheme has been acclaimed as “one of the biggest financial inclusion initiatives in the world”.
Bank accounts under PMJDY have increased to 43 Crore with total deposits over Rs. 1.46 lakh crore is no doubt, a great landmark in Government Flagship Programme. Out of the 43.04 Crore PMJDY accounts, 36.86 Crore or 85.6 per cent are operative. The total RuPay cards issued to PMJDY account holders rose to 31.23 Crore is another milestone in the PMJDY.
AIR correspondent spoke to some beneficiaries from Andhra Pradesh. Venkata Krishnnaiah from Ongole in Prakasham district said, “Earlier I didn’t have a savings bank account. I have later opened a bank account under PMJDY and it was possible only during Narendra Modi’s Government. From the PMJDY I could get all the benefits under the scheme and It helps my financial status also. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this.”
PMJDY beneficiary, Raghava Rao from Ongone said, “I have a PMJDY account ….I have been doing my transactions for the past two years. I am very much benefitted from the PMJDY scheme and I am thankful to the Central Government for this.”
District Lead Bank Manager, G.V.B.D. Hari Prasad while responding to the successful implementation of the Scheme in Srikakulam District said, “In Srikakulam there are 6,32,891 Jan Dhan accounts ; PMSBY 8,72,631 and in PMJJBY there are 4,26,732 accounts in Srikakulam District. Thus , the Union Government is also focussed on the promotion of digital payments including RuPay card usage amongst PMJDY account holders through the creation of acceptance infrastructure across India. PMJDY is very much successful in Srikakulam District in general and Andhra Pradesh in particular.”
