Sensex rises 175 points, Nifty ends at 16,705; Mid and Smallcaps outperform

Indian equity indices closed higher on Friday. Buying interest was seen across all sectoral stocks. Ultra Tech Cement was the top gainer among blue-chip stocks, surged 3.64 per cent. Axis Bank, Dr Reddys Labs, Bajaj Finserv, and Sun Pharma were among the other top Sensex gainers. While Infosys, IndusInd Bank, M&M and Nestle were laggards.

Earlier in Asian Indices, Singapore’s Straits Times fell by 0.92 per cent and Japan’s Nikkei 225 index declined by 0.36 per cent. China’s Shanghai Composite surged by 0.59 per cent.

Market Overview

The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 increased by 0.31 and 0.41 per cent respectively. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at 56,124 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 16,705 mark. The Sensex gained 175 points to trade at 56,124 and the Nifty50 rose by 68 points to trade at 16,705.

Nifty50 Index

In Nifty50 index shares, Ultra Tech Cement was the biggest gainer, increased by 3.54 per cent. Hindalco, SBI Life Insurance, Larsen, Dr Reddys Labs and Bajaj Finserv were among the other gainers.

On the other hand, IndusInd Bank was the worst performer in the pack, down by 1.13 per cent. Infosys, M&M, Tata Consumer products, Nestle, HDFC Bank and HCL Tech were the other worst performers in the pack.

Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices

The Nifty Midcap-100 index rose 1.06 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index surged 0.77 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, NALCO gained 7.87 per cent, Fortis Health rose 6.20 per cent, Mphasis, Adani Power and JSW Energy also surged, while AU Small Finance, Ipca Labs and Oil India declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, Navin Fluorine gained 6.94 per cent. On the other hand, Wockhardt fell 4.54 per cent, Infibeam Avenue, Rallis India and Radico Khaitan declined.

Sectoral Indices

In NSE sectoral indices, 20 out of 20 sectors surged. Nifty Metal was the top performer as it gained 1.63 per cent, Nifty Pharma rose 1.38 per cent, followed by Nifty Commodities increased by 1.24 per cent.
