E-Shram Portal- National Database on Unorganised Workers launched to facilitate better implementation of various Social Security Schemes

Labour and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav on Thursday launched e-Shram portal – National Database on Unorganized Workers in New Delhi.  The portal will maintain a database of workers in the country’s unorganised sector and facilitate better implementation of various Social Security Schemes for their welfare.

In his address, Mr Yadav said, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the portal will ensure overall welfare of unorganised workers in the country. He said, it was also demanded in the Parliament. The Minister said, Government will have an aadhaar-based database of the unorganized workers across various sectors in the country. He said, this is a beginning towards achieving the goal of last-mile delivery. Mr Yadav said, the registration process has been kept simple.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameswar Teli said, Labour Ministry has approved a budget of approximately 404 crore rupees for the registration of the Unorganised Workers on the E-Shram portal. He said, None of the Unorganized Workers will have to spend any money for the registration on the portal. Mr Teli said, after registering on the e-SHRAM portal, unorganized workers will need not to register separately for Govt’s Social Security Schemes. He said, e-SHRAM card containing a 12-digit UAN will be valid throughout the country.

Secretary Labour and Employment Apurva Chandra said, more than 80 per cent of the workers in the country are from the unorganized sector and today, we have a technology by means of which we can add all the workers of unorganized sector in the e-SHRAM portal. He said, details of unorganized workers like skill, educational qualification, place of residence, state etc. have been asked for and the information will be used to ensure that benefits like PF, Housing, Ration Card are made available to them. Mr Chandra said, in future when there will be more data, we can work for skill-upgradation of unorganized workers. They can be made to pursue a skill-development course in their field of work and can be enrolled in the National Career Service portal. He said, data from e-SHRAM portal about availability of people having specific skills and in particular fields of works can also be shared with prospective employers.
