The Sensex and the Nifty on Thursday finished almost flat trading in a narrow range amid negative global cues. The BSE Sensex rose five points, or 0.01 percent, to close at 55,949. The NSE Nifty also added two points, or 0.01 percent, to settle at 16,640.
In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap gained 0.3 percent and the Small-Cap index surged 0.31 percent, out-performing the Sensex.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 13 companies gained while 17 logged losses. Reliance was top gainer as it surged 1.3 percent followed by Mahindra & Mahindra which gained 1.2 percent. HCL Tech and ICICI, both climbed 1.1 percent.
On the other hand, Bharti Airtel plunged 4.2 percent while Maruti declined 1.6 percent. Power Grid and SBI, both fell 1.3 percent.
In sectoral indices, 12 out of 19 sectors logged gains. Energy climbed 1.1 percent and Power sector stocks surged 0.9 percent. Oil & Gas and Capital Goods, both rose 0.7 percent. On the other side, Telecom declined 3.5 percent, Metal fell 1.4 percent and Basic Material slipped 0.8 percent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 1672 companies gained while 1520 fell. Shares of 130 companies remained unchanged.
