Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan today said that the Union Territory of Puducherry is the first to post Medical Officers in all 81 Sub-Centres in the country and the government has transformed 40 Primary Health Centres and 81 Sub-Centres into Health Wellness Centres. The first session of the fifteenth Assembly of Puducherry today began with the Lieutenant Governor’s address.
Speaking on this occasion, the Lt. Governor mentioned that the timely measures initiated by the District Administration, then and there through various movement restrictions for protecting people of the Union Territory. She was appreciative of the selfless efforts of all the frontline warriors including Medical Officers, Staff Nurses, other Health Officials, Police Personnel, Revenue Staff, Municipal Staff and other staff for their dedicated service.
Highlighting various programmes and achievements made by the government under various sectors during the financial year, Dr. Tamilisai said that the financial resources of the Union Territory are very limited especially after introduction of GST and the Administration is constrained to strike a balance between available resources and committed expenditure.
She said, the Ayushman Bharat- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana Scheme is being successfully implemented for the second year and one lakh three thousand and 66 families have been covered under this scheme in the Union Territory. In order to support the students to continue their higher education, the application fee has been waived for all who intend to join Government or Society-run Arts and Science Colleges, Law Colleges, Polytechnics and Engineering Colleges during the year 2020-21 and this had benefitted nearly 10,000 aspiring students.
The address was delivered in Tamil for the first time in Puducherry by the Lt. Governor. Earlier, the Lt. Governor was received by the Speaker Embalam R. Selvam.
Following the address, election to the post of Deputy Speaker was conducted. Mr Rajavelu of Nettapakkam Constituency was declared unopposed by the Speaker.
The budget to the Union Territory of Puducherry will be presented in the Assembly later in the evening by the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who is also holding the Finance Portfolio.
