Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh passes away; President, Vice-President, Prime Minister and several leaders express grief

Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh passed away in Lucknow last night. He was 89 and was in the hospital for the last few weeks. He breathed his last at SGPGI Hospital Lucknow. His last rites will be performed tomorrow at Naraora Ghat in the Bulandshahar district. Singh was the former governor of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. He was 2 time MP from Bulandshahar and Etah also. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reached Lucknow leaving his Gorakhpur visit in the middle. An emergency meeting of the state cabinet was called at midnight. The Cabinet condoled the death of two-time CM and 9-time assembly members.

The Chief Minister announced three-day government mourning (Rajkiya Shok) in the state and a holiday tomorrow. Briefing media in Lucknow Mr. Yogi said that it is a big loss to all of us.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed grief over the demise of Kalyan Singh. The President said in a tweet, Kalyan Singh had a magical connection with the masses. He said, as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Singh determinedly pursued clean politics and purged governance of criminals and corruption. Mr Kovind said, Kalyan Singh dignified the offices he held and his demise leaves a vacuum in public life.

The Vice President said that Kalyan Singh was a nationalist and an exemplary leader who was deeply committed to serving people. The Vice President said, his thoughts are with the bereaved family and followers of Kalyan Singh.

In a series of tweets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, Kalyan Singh was a statesman, veteran administrator, grassroots level leader and great human. He leaves behind an indelible contribution towards the development of Uttar Pradesh. He said he spoke to Kalyan Singh’s son Rajveer Singh and expressed his condolences.

Prime Minister said, generations to come will remain forever grateful to Kalyan Singh for his contributions towards India’s cultural regeneration. He was firmly rooted in Indian values and took pride in our centuries-old traditions. Mr Modi said, Kalyan Singh gave voice to crores of people belonging to the marginalised sections of society. Prime Minister said that Kalyan Singh made numerous efforts towards the empowerment of farmers, youngsters and women.
Several Ministers have also condoled the demise of Kalyan Singh. Home Minister Amit Shah said the country and the entire BJP family is mourning his death. He said it is rare to find a great personality like Kalyan Singh who contributed to the progress of the country by connecting the farmers, poor and deprived sections with the mainstream of development.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Kalyan Singh was not only a stalwart of Indian politics, but he also left an indelible mark on the country and society with his personality and creativity. He said his long political life was devoted to the service of the masses.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said the political vacuum created by Kalyan Singh’s departure is impossible to fill.

BJP President JP Nadda said Kalyan Singh always fought for the welfare and rights of the poor and deprived sections. He said he always kept national interest and public welfare paramount in his political life and never compromised on ideals.
