Sensex, Nifty hit fresh record highs in afternoon trade

The Sensex and the Nifty today hit fresh record highs in afternoon trade. Both stocks was trading with modest gains even as the cues from other Asian equity markets were negative. The Sensex climbed above the 55,500 mark while the Nifty was trading above 16,550 level.

The BSE Sensex gained 145 points, or 0.26 percent, to trade at 55,583. The NSE Nifty also surged 31 points, or 0.19 percent, to trade at 16,560
