Sensex closes above 55,400, Nifty settles above 16,500 

The Sensex and the Nifty on Friday hit fresh record highs. Both equity indices surged more than one percent even as the cues from other Asian markets were negative. The Sensex closed above 55,400 while the Nifty settled above 16,500 level.

The BSE Sensex gained 593 points, or 1.08 percent, to trade at 55,437. The NSE Nifty also surged 165 points, or 1.01 percent, to trade at 16,529.
