The Sensex and the Nifty today gained to hit fresh record highs. Both equity indices added marginally amid positive global cues. The Sensex climbed above the 54,500 mark.
The BSE Sensex gained 152 points, or 0.28 percent, to trade at 54,555. The NSE Nifty also surged 22 points, or 0.13 percent, to trade at 16,280.
In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap plunged 0.85 percent and the Small-Cap index tumbled 2.05 percent, under-performing the Sensex.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 14 companies gained while 16 fell. Bharti Airtel was top gainer as it surged 3.8 percent followed by Tech Mahindra which gained 2.8 percent. HDFC rose 1.9 percent and Kotak Bank climbed 1.8 percent. Mahindra and Mahindra gained 1.5 percent.
On the other hand, Tata Steel tumbled 2.7 percent and Power grid decline 2.2 percent. NTPC slipped 2.1 percent, ITC fell 1.9 percent and SBI ended 1.6 percent down.
In sectoral indices six sectors gained while 13 logged losses. Telecom gained 2.1 percent, Tech rose 0.9 percent and IT sectors stock appreciated 0.7 percent.
On the other side, Metal lost the most as it plunged 2.7 percent followed by Basic material which declined 2.2 percent. Reality sector stocks fell 1.9 percent, Power ended 1.7 percent down and Industrial slipped one and half percent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was negative as shares of 709 companies gained while 2559 fell. Shares of 106 companies remained unchanged.
