Sensex rises 125 points, Nifty ends at 16,258; Mid & Small-Caps underperform

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty50 ended on the green side of the market on Monday. Buying interest was seen in private banks and IT stocks. Selling pressure was witnessed in metal shares. Mahindra & Mahindra was the top gainer among blue-chip stocks, surged 2.18 per cent. Axis Bank, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv, and IndusInd Bank were among the other top Sensex gainers. While Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, NTPC and Larsen were laggards.

Earlier in Asian Indices, South Korea’s Kospi fell by 0.30 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index increased by 0.33 per cent and China’s Shanghai Composite surged by 1.05 per cent.

Market Overview

The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 increased by 0.23 and 0.12 per cent respectively. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at 54,400 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 16,258 mark. The Sensex gained 125 points to trade at 54,402 and the Nifty50 rose by 20 points to trade at 16,258.

Nifty50 Index

In Nifty50 index shares, M&M was the biggest gainer, increased by 2.17 per cent. Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, IndusInd Bank, Tech Mahindra and Nestle were among the other gainers.

On the other hand, Tata Consumer Products was the worst performer in the pack, down by 1.83 per cent. Coal India, Hindalco, Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel, IOC and ONGC were the other worst performers in the pack.

Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices

The Nifty Midcap-100 index declined 0.73 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index fell 0.91 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, IRCTC gained 6.46 per cent, Ipca Labs rose 5.68 per cent, AU Small Finance Bank, City Union Bank and Alkem Lab also surged, while NALCO, Future Retail and Edelweiss declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, TV18 Broadcast gained 6.39 per cent. On the other hand, Strides Pharma fell 7.05 per cent, Vakrangee, Hind Copper and CSB Bank declined.

Sectoral Indices

In NSE sectoral indices, 8 out of 17 sectors surged. Nifty Media was the top performer as it gained 1.09 per cent, Nifty Pvt Bank rose 0.69 per cent, followed by Nifty IT increased by 0.44 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty Metal was the worst performer, down by 1.87 per cent, Followed by Nifty PSU Bank declined by 1.56 per cent.
