Parliament has passed the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2021 with the Rajya Sabha approving it today amid din. The Lok Sabha has already passed the Bill. The legislation seeks to amend the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India Act, 2008. The Act designates an airport as a major airport if it has annual passenger traffic of at least 35 lakh. The Bill amends the definition of major airport and adds that the Central Government may group airports and notify the group as a major airport.
Speaking on the Bill, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiradtiya Scindia highlighted the importance of the legislation. The Bill was passed after a brief discussion amid continuous protest by the opposition parties. K R Suresh Reddy of TRS, M Thambidurai of AIADMK, V. Vijayasai Reddy of YSR Congress, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya of CPI (M), Manoj Jha of RJD, Sushil Gupta of Aam Aadi Party and others participated in the discussion.
