Through PMGKAY, the Centre is running the longest ever exercise of distributing free food grains to people. About Rs. 2.84 Lakh crore food subsidy got incurred during 2020-21. More than 3.3 crore eligible beneficiaries in Gujarat got 25.5 Lakh Metric tonnes of foodgrain, incurring a subsidy amount of more than 5 thousand crore.

Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Nitinbhai Patel are also present in the event. According to a statement released, a public participation programme is being launched in the state to create further awareness about the scheme.

About Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year to ameliorate the hardships being faced by the poor population of the country due to economic disruption caused by Corona virus. Under PMGKAY, 5 Kg/person additional food grain is given to all beneficiaries covered under National Food Security Act.
Distribution of foodgrains
Today, the yojana has gained recognition as the longest-ever exercise of distributing free food grains to people being run by the Centre. Under the Scheme, nearly 948 Lakh Metric Tonnes of foodgrains was allocated last year which is 50% more than a normal year to ensure food security during COVID. A total of 305 lakh tonnes food grains had been lifted between April to November last year by the States and Union Territories.
Consumer Affairs Ministry said that for PMGKAY-3 a total of over 78 lakh tonnes of food grains had been lifted by the States and Union Territories for two months i.e. May and June this year. A total over 198 lakh tonnes of food grains have already been allocated to States and UTs for a period of five motnhs this year i.e. from July to November under PMGKAY – 4.
To further strengthen food security for migrant beneficiaries, the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme has been implemented so far in 33 States/UTs.
