Govt allocating approximately 70 to 75 thousand quintals of Breeder Seed of high yielding varieties every year: Narendra Singh Tomar

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar today said that the Indian seed market is one of the biggest markets in the world with a total seed export of approximately 1,000 crore rupees. In a reply to a question in Lok Sabha, the Minister informed that the government is allocating approximately 70 to 75 thousand quintals of Breeder Seed of high yielding varieties every year.

Mr. Tomar told that the government was coordinating with the states in meeting the All-India seed requirement and availability through the mechanism of Zonal Seeds Review Meetings and National Conference on Agriculture prior to each sowing season.

The Minister told that the Government has started 150 seed hubs in Pulses, 35 in Oilseeds and 24 in Nutri-cereals across the country to supply in good quality seed of these crops to farmers.  He said that there are 25 seed certification agencies working in different states to monitor certified seed production of approximately 250 to 260 lakh quintals every year.
