Medical equipment are stranded due to road blockade in Barak Valley in Assam: Mizoram Health Minister

Mizoram Health Minister Dr R. Lalthangliana has said that vehicles carrying medical equipment including life-saving drugs, COVID-19 test kits and oxygen cylinders are stranded due to the road blockade in Barak Valley in Assam. The road blockade imposed by several groups in Barak Valley has continued for the last seven days following the conflict on 26th of July over the inter-state boundary row between Assam and Mizoram.

While talking to the media over the current situation of COVID-19, Dr Lalthangliana today said that amid the pandemic situation, the blockade is very unfortunate and disheartening. This sort of inhuman act cannot be imagined even in the worst of wars, he claimed.

Describing the situation, Dr Lalthangliana today wrote to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging him to intervene in the matter. He also wrote to the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Assam’s Health Minister Keshab Mahanta. He said that the blockade has severely affected the availability of medicines to the patients who are in critical conditions.

In his letter, Dr. Lalthangliana wrote that the fundamental right to life as guaranteed by the Constitution includes the right to basic health care and medicines which has been denied due to these belligerent activities.
