After a long 49 years wait, the Indian Men’s Hockey team to play in the semi-finals of the men’s hockey tournament at the Olympics after registering a thumping victory against Great Britain.
India on Sunday, August 1, defeated Great Britain 3-1 in the quarter-final match and sailed into the semi-finals.
In Sunday’s clash, Dilpreet Singh gave India a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the first quarter through a field goal. The second goal came from the stick of Gurjant Singh at the start of the second quarter. Mere few minutes before the end of the fourth quarter, Hardik Singh (57th minute) scored another goal for India. It was in the 45th minute that Samuel Ward of Great Britain flies in to the rescue of his teammate and scored a goal.
The Indian Hockey team led by Captain Manpreet Singh to go against World No. 2 Belgium in the Men’s Hockey semi-finals at Oi Hockey Stadium tomorrow, August 3, around 7 am (IST). This was the first time after the 1972 Munich Olympics that India qualified for the semi-finals.

The Men’s Hockey Team had earlier defeated New Zealand by 3-1 in their opening match. However, India lost their second match against Olympic Champion Australia with a heavy margin of 7-1. India then defeated Spain by a 3-0 margin in their next match. Later, India defeated Japan 5-3 in their final Group A match.
