The Indian Men’s Hockey Team sailed into the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games after the Men in Blue registered a smashing victory against Argentina by scoring two goals in the final two minutes of the match.
The Men’s Hockey team defeated the Rio Olympics gold medallist Argentina by 3-1 in Group A match on Thursday. With today’s win, India stands second in the Group A points table with three wins and one loss. Australia has so far been unbeaten and is currently topping the Group A points table.
After goalless first two quarters, India scored their first goal through Varun Kumar in the 43rd minute. Followed by two more goals from Vivek Sagar Prasad (58th minute) and Harmanpreet Singh (59th minute).
It was in the 48th minute, Argentina’s Casella Schuth successfully managed to convert penalty corner into a lone goal struck by Argentina. Argentina currently stands at fifth position on the Group A points table. In order to continue their stint for a Quarterfinal berth, Argentina should manage to score victory in the final preliminary match to be played against New Zealand on Friday.
Out of total of four matches played, this was India’s third win in the competition. India had earlier defeated New Zealand by 3-1 in their opening match. However, India lost their second match against Olympic Champion Australia with a heavy margin of 7-1. India then defeated Spain by a 3-0 margin in their next match. Two goals by Rupinder Pal Singh and a field goal by Simranjeet Singh helped India to seal the second victory in group stages.
