12,000 Rohingyas affected, 11 killed in flash floods and landslides in Bangladesh

More than 12,000 Rohingyas have been affected and 11 killed in flash floods and landslides in the Cox Bazar area of Bangladesh. At least 6 people have been killed in the Balukhali and Palong Khali camps on Tuesday. Five more people died in a camp at Teknaf on Wednesday, said a local official to the media.

The UNHCR has said that 2,500 shelters have been damaged or destroyed in the flash floods and landslides in the area which received over 300 mm of rain between Monday and Tuesday. This is nearly half of the monthly rainfall for the month of July in one day.

Several places in Bangladesh including Dhaka continued to receive widespread rain on Thursday as monsoon was active over most of the country.

So far, more than 10,000 Rohingyas  have been temporarily relocated to safer places after their shelters were destroyed due to flash floods and landslides, said the Refugee Commissioner Shah Rezwan Hayat to AFP.

More than a million Rohingya refugees are currently taking shelter in Bangladesh. Majority of them are living in 34 Refugee camps in the Cox’s Bazar area of the country. They had fled from the Rakhine province after a military crackdown by the Myanmar army in August 2017.
