Sensex down 135 points, Nifty ends at 15,709; Auto and Financial Stocks drag Indices

Kotak Mahindra top laggard among blue-chip stocks, down 2.64 per cent. Dr Reddys Labs, M&M, Power Grid Corp, NTPC and SBI Bank among other laggards. Bharti Airtel top Sensex gainer, up 5.08 per cent.

Indian equity benchmarks BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 closed on the red side of the market on Wednesday. Selling pressure was witnessed in financial, auto and metal stocks. Kotak Mahindra top laggard among blue-chip stocks, down 2.64 per cent. Dr Reddys Labs, M&M, Power Grid Corp, NTPC and SBI Bank among other laggards. Bharti Airtel top Sensex gainer, up 5.08 per cent. Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank and UltraTech Cement among other top performers.

Earlier in Asian Indices, South Korea’s Kospi rose by 0.13 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index declined by 1.39 per cent. China’s Shanghai Composite fell by 0.58 per cent.

Market Overview

The BSE Sensex and Nifty50 declined by 0.26 and 0.24 per cent respectively. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at the 52,400 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 15,709 mark. The Sensex fell 135 points to trade at 52,443 and the Nifty50 declined by 37 points to trade at 15,709.

Nifty50 Index

In the 50-share pack of Nifty50, Bharti Airtel was the biggest gainer, increased by 5.06 per cent. Tata Steel, SBI Life Insurance, Divis Labs, IndusInd Bank, JSW Steel and Bajaj Finserv were among the other gainers.

On the other hand, Kotak Mahindra was the worst performer in the pack, down by 2.66 per cent. Cipla, Tata Motors, Dr Reddys Labs, M&M, Tata Consumer Products and NTPC were the other worst performers in the pack.

Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices

The Nifty Midcap-100 index declined by 0.51 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index fell by 0.50 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, Bharat Electronics gained 3.59 per cent, Ajanta Pharma rose 3.70 per cent, Adani Green Energy, Adani Power and SAIL also surged, while Dalmia Bharat, M&M Financial and Canara Bank declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, Century gained 16.67 per cent. On the other hand, Firstsource Solutions fell 5.04 per cent, Affle India, Indiabulls Real, MMTC Ltd and DCM Shriram declined.

Sectoral Indices

In NSE sectoral indices, 12 out of 17 sectors declined. Nifty Metal was the top performer as it gained 1.22 per cent, Nifty Commodities rose 0.21 per cent, followed by Nifty IT increased by 0.214 per cent. While Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Auto declined.
