Noted veteran actress Jayanthi passed away in Bengaluru today due to age related ailments. She was 76. Starting her acting career in 1963, Jayanthi has over 500 movies to her credit in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi.
Fondly known as Abhinaya Sharadhe or the Goddess of acting, Jayanthi portrayed the main character in films led by superstars Dr. Raj Kumar, N T Ramarao, Shivaji Ganeshan, M G Ramachandran, Rajnikanth and Shammi Kapoor. Her cameo in Kannada film Director Puttanna Kanagal’s ‘Naagarahaavu’ film won the hearts of people.
In the film Jayanthi immortalised Onake Obbavva, the brave woman of Chitradurga who prevented Hyder Ali soldiers from sneaking into the fort by using a pestle. Jayanthi had won Karnataka State Film awards seven times and the Filmfare Awards twice and Dr. Rajkumar lifetime award.
