North-East Development: Multipurpose Convention Centre and Exhibition Facility of the NESAC

Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the Multipurpose Convention Centre and Exhibition Facility of the North Eastern Space Applications Centre-NESAC, in Shillong on 24 July while also presiding over the high-level review meeting regarding the operation of Space Science and Technology Centre.

The development Journey of the Northeast

The Centre has identified development areas of North-East, upon which, the government has been relentlessly working to make advances and bring fast-paced changes.

These development areas include linking the North-East with rail connectivity, air connectivity, ports connectivity and road connectivity as well as IT connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called this group of 8 states in North-East as Ashtalakshmi. Along the same idea, the Government, with the mutual goal of India’s cooperation has taken these states ahead on the path of development.

Development Agenda for North -East

The development projects in the North-East have been initiated keeping in mind these three agendas:

First, to preserve and promote the dialects, languages, dance, music, food, culture, and create awareness about it across the whole of India;

Secondly, by resolving all disputes of the Northeast and making it a peaceful region; and

Thirdly, by making the Northeast a developed region and bring its GDP contribution back to the pre-Independence level.

Home Minister Amit Shah informed that even as the nation was grappling with surging COVID-19 infections, the Government has ensured to give priority to North-East.

From sending ventilators, oxygen cylinders, provisioning of medicines, or be it the vaccination programme, the government has made all efforts to make these available for the North-East region.

NESAC’s role in making the Northeast drugs free, terrorism free and developed

Home Minister Amit Shah while laying the foundation stone for the Multipurpose Convention Centre and Exhibition Facility of the NESAC stated that the reformed structure of the NESAC society will help in the further development of the North-East.

With the coordination of MHA and NESAC, a single-window system will be made so that the states can get real-time information about flood management.

Under the “Act East” policy, the government is linking North-Eastern states with the ports of Chittagong in Bangladesh and Sittwe in Myanmar.

Important roads of North Eastern states are also being upgraded by making them National Highways and hill states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram are being connected by rail.

The Home Minister also stressed the promotion of tourism keeping in view the natural beauty of the northeastern states.

The overall development of the North-eastern region depends on its enhanced link with other parts of India, under this idea, the Government aims to link the capitals of all the states of the Northeast by rail, road and airways before 2023-24.
