COVID-19 pandemic can be opportunity to build stronger, resilient & more sustainable world: Maldives FM

President-Elect of the 76th United Nations General Assembly and Foreign Affairs Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid has said that the COVID19 pandemic may have put the world in crisis, but he believes this could also be an opportunity to build a stronger, resilient and a more sustainable world.

He said, this could be an opportunity to enhance multilateralism, strengthen cooperation. Delivering the 38th Sapru House Lecture in New Delhi today the subject on ‘Presidency of Hope – 76th UNGA: Covid Pandemic and the Need for Reformed Multilateralism, Mr Shahid said, his immediate priority will be recovering from Covid-19 as the impacts have been immense, and yet still, this pandemic seems to be far from over.

 

The United Nations can and must do more to address this. Mr Shahid said, building on existing initiatives and approaches, he will be looking to address the health of the people and the economies and work to ensure vaccine equity.

 

The Maldivian Foreign Minister said, together, we need to overcome the challenges that we face in vaccinating the world.

The President-Elect of the 76th United Nations General Assembly said, his responsibility is to ensure that the General Assembly demands and designs a United Nations that is ready, that is able, and that is best suited to serve the needs of the day.

 

The Foreign Affairs Minister of Maldives said, around the world today, Indian generosity has ensured that people in 95 countries have COVID19 vaccines.
