6.44 crore persons have been provided employment in current financial year till July 21: Niranjan Jyoti

Minister of State for Rural Development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti has said that in the current financial year till 21ST of July, as many as 6.44 crore persons have been provided employment and more than 127.87 crore person- days have been generated under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, she said, during previous financial year 2020-21, 11.19 crore persons were provided employment and more than 389 crore person – days were generated. She also informed that during the current financial year, over 40 thousand 862 crore rupees has been released for the implementation of the scheme.

The Minister also informed that in order to boost employment opportunity in the wake of Covid lockdown, the government had launched a campaign known as Garib Kalyan Rajgar Abhiayan of 125 days in June last year for returnee migrants workers and similarly affected citizens in rural areas. She said, a total of 50.78 crore person-days employment has been generated during the Abhiyaan with a total expenditure of 39 thousand 293 crore rupees.
