First batch of Indian athletes to depart for Tokyo Olympics

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Minister of State for Sports Nisith Pramanik will send-off first batch of Indian athletes from New Delhi for Tokyo Olympics tonight.

A formal send-off ceremony will take place at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and the contingent of 88 which includes 54 athletes, support staff and Indian Olympic Association representatives will depart today.

Athletes and support staff in eight sports including Archery , Hockey, Badminton, Table Tennis, Judo, Gymnastics and Weightlifting will be departing from New Delhi with largest contingent being of hockey. AIR correspondent reports that 127 Indian athletes have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, which is a record, overhauling the 117 that qualified for the Rio Olympics.
