Death toll rises to 11 in Vidisha well tragedy; President, Prime Minister express grief

In Madhya Pradesh Vidisha well tragedy, the death toll has risen to 11. The rescue operation that began on Thursday night was carried throughout yesterday and was called off later in the night after bodies of eleven missing villagers were recovered. As many as 19 people have been pulled out safely from the well.

President Ram Nath Kovind has expressed grief on the death of many people in an accident in Vidisha. In a tweet, Mr Kovind has expressed hope that all the efforts to rescue those trapped in the accident will be successful. He expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy. And announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 each to injured and free medical treatment.

The incident took place on Thursday night when people were gathered to rescue a child who had fallen into a well. Due to overcrowding, the walls of the well collapsed and the people gathered fell inside the well.

Teams of NDRF, SDRF, local police, administration and other authorities conducted the rescue operations.
