India’s first 5-star hotel over a live railway track has been built at the Gandhinagar Capital Railway Station by the Indian Railway Stations Redevelopment Corporation (IRSDC).
The Gandhinagar Capital Railway station has also been renovated and is equipped with modern amenities to provide a world-class experience to passengers. The station’s interior design has been upgraded, and attractive wall paintings have been added. Further, the artwork on the station facade and inside the station depicts the rich cultural heritage of Gujarat.
Apart from providing a visual delight, the hotel and the station aims to enhance the travel experience of the passengers.
India’s first 5-star hotel on air space
The first of its kind, the hotel is built atop a railway track. The project began four years ago with PM Modi laying the foundation stone in 2017.
The hotel has over 318 five-star category rooms for the ultimate experience of passengers who could prefer to stay here. It is situated near the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre and spreads over 34 acres of land.
Vibration and acoustics studies were also conducted to make sure that the passengers on the station and the guests in the hotel are not in discomfort when the train passes through the track.
An elevated bridge of length 937 metres has also been constructed to reach the hotel at 22 metres from the ground level. Further, the hotel column layout is different from the column layout on platforms.
Indian Railway Stations Redevelopment Corporation (IRSDC)
The redevelopment program is meant to transform railway stations into a travel hub. The railway stations redevelopment program was launched by the Government of India to redevelop 400 railway stations across the country at Rs 1 lakh crore through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The project aims at improving passenger amenities by taking advantage of the infrastructural developments of the country.
Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC) is a joint venture company of Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), a statutory authority under the Ministry of Railways and Ircon International Limited (IRCON). The company takes up Indian railways’ projects to develop or redevelop the existing or new railway station or projects related to real estate development on the railway.
Business viability and projections
The hotel is sure to attract tourists boost tourism in the city. To enhance the experience of the guests, the hotel will also have a special theme-based lighting arrangement that would change every night. Moreover, the redevelopment project will also aid in boosting the revenue of the station.
Further, the project aims to efficiently utilize land and infrastructure available in the country. It also gives scope for more such developmental projects to be taken in the country. The Puri Railway Station will also be soon redeveloped into a world-class transit hub which will boost tourism prospects and position it among the leading destinations for religious tourism. Similarly, the Nagpur railway station, Gwalior railway station, Surat railway station, and Kanpur railway station are under development stages for redevelopment.
