Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation or in short BIMSTEC is a regional multilateral organisation. Its members lie in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal indicating a contiguous regional unity.
What significance does BIMSTEC hold for India? It allows India to pursue its three core policies: Neighborhood First – primacy to the country’s immediate periphery. It also resonates with India’s Act East Policy that intends to connect India with Southeast Asia.
Most importantly, BIMSTEC fulfils the purpose of Economic Development of India’s northeastern states by linking them to the Bay of Bengal region via Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Other than that it provides a separate platform for India to engage with its neighbours that are already a part of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
