External Affairs Ministry today said the Consulate General in Kandahar has not been closed but India based personnel have been brought back for the time being due to the intense fighting near Kandahar city. In response to media queries on the Indian Consulate in Kandahar, Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India is closely monitoring the evolving security situation in Afghanistan and safety and security of Indian personnel is paramount. He emphasised that this is a purely temporary measure until the situation stabilizes and the Consulate continues to operate through local staff members.
Arrangements are being made to ensure continued delivery of visa and consular services through Indian Embassy in Kabul. The spokesperson said India remains committed to a peaceful, sovereign and democratic Afghanistan.
